The
Saaski, "The
Seagull", visits Narvik
The reconstruction of Gidsken
Jakobsens aircraft, Saaski,
“The Seagull”,
is being loaned to Narvik as
part of the 50th jubilee celebrations of the Winter
Festival week.
Narvik’s famous women pilot, is being
celebrated with a exhibition of her life and the
aircraft is a natural part of that.
Halvor Nilsen and Ivan Kristiansen,
from BLHF, have taken the aircraft apart and will
accompany it on its journey north and re-assemble it in
Narvik.
The aircraft is on loan as a
small "thank you" because the people of
Narvik has helped finance the
project.
Nilsen and Kristiansen have been the
main builders of the reconstruction of Gidskens plane.
The original aircraft disappeared in Finland just before
the 2nd world war. A similar aircraft is
displayed in the aviation museum in Helsingfors and this was
used as a pattern for the reconstruction. This
reconstruction took about 6
years to complete and became a part of the exhibition at
the Norwegian Aviation Museum in 2004.
