About the Museum

The National Norwegian Aviation Museum, Norsk Luftfartsmuseum, provides you with a fascinating in-depth summary of Norway's civil and military aviation history. In a building shaped like a giant propeller, you can set out on an exciting "journey" through eras of our modern day history. Experience dreams become reality, war and peace, aviation as entertainment, defence system and as transportation. Trace the path of technological development that has led to a means of transport that we take for granted today.

The exhibitions at the Museum are the result of a co-operation between Norsk Luftfartsmuseum, the
Norwegian Air Force Museum and the AVINOR Museum.

Mission and objectives

-
The development

Norsk Luftfartsmuseum is centrally situated in Bodø, on approximately the same site as the German airfield from the Second World War. The present day airport is next-door neighbour, and was one of the most important military air bases during the Cold War. Over the years, both military and civil aviation has contributed to the accumulation of considerable expertise in Bodø, within most fields relevant to aircraft and aviation.

On March 31, 1992, the Norwegian Storting passed the following motion: "In accordance with previous consideration in the Storting in connection with this issue, and the Government's positive assessment of the proposal to establish an integrated national aviation centre in Bodø, the Storting endorses the establishment of a national air defence museum as an integrated part of the
Norwegian Aviation Centre in Bodø."

HRH King Harald V officially opened the Norwegian Aviation Centre to the public on May 15, 1994.

On the initiative of the Ministry of Culture, acting on behalf of the Government, the Norwegian Aviation Museum was established, as a public trust on January 1, 1998 with Bodø City Council and Nordland County Council as co-founders. The trust consists of the former Norwegian Aviation Centre in Bodø, together with employees and properties from the former Norwegian Civil Aviation Museum.
Norsk Luftfartsmuseum was awarded status as a national museum, with running costs to be covered by funds granted in the National Budget.
Norsk Luftfartsmuseum is the national aviation museum of Norway and therefore has a natural responsibility to engage in all aspects of the history of Norwegian aviation.
